Putty Wall Treatment: 3 Common Problems & Solutions

Putty walls are the most common substrate for wallpaper and wallcovering. However, not every putty wall can be pasted directly. The right primer choice and surface prep depend on the actual condition of the putty layer.

1. Standard preparation

Normally, rolling a wall primer over the putty wall is enough before hanging. But the exact primer type and application method should be decided after testing the wall’s flatness, moisture level, firmness, cleanliness and pH balance. Fix any surface issues first, then choose the matching primer accordingly.

2. Powdery putty wall

First identify how severe the powdering is:

  • Severe powdering: Scrape off the weak putty layer completely, then re‑skim coat with fresh putty.
  • Slight powdering: Apply a dedicated penetrating wall primer to seal the surface.

3. Soft, dent‑prone putty wall

If the putty layer feels soft and sinks easily under pressure, use a hard‑reinforcing primer — such as diamond‑grade or crystal‑grade wall primer. Once the surface is hardened, wallpaper and wallcovering can be safely installed.
